How To Win The Two-Fold Battle Against Bad Habits

A Habit is defined as ‘a constant, almost automatic, practice acquired by frequent repetition’ by the Oxford Dictionary. A simple description of a behaviour that can make or break every aspect of our lives. If you have a habit that is to handle boredom or stress but ends up hurting you. It’s a bad habit. A bad habit lets you down and makes you feel disgusting. It is vital to understand them to break out of them. A bad habit comprises internal ( Emotion)and external factors (Environment). Absence of any one or both of the factors breaks the routine.

Let us understand some commonly seen bad habits:

Scrolling in bed: It feels very nice to scroll endlessly(due to boredom) before going to bed but this affects the quality of sleep. Therefore it is a combination of boredom and comfort of bed that needs to be removed. A simple solution would be to not use your mobile phone in bed (put it far from arm’s reach) and occupy yourself with a book till you fall asleep.

This trick also works when you need to wake up early without snoozing.

Binge-eating: Eating as a way to cope with stress, being alone or just boredom is ubiquitous and never leaves you satisfied. When you feel the urge to binge remove yourself from a place that has access to junk. Or make your home a junk-free place (dealing with the environment) and force yourself to deal with the emotions in healthy ways eg: taking a walk.

Bad driving: Speeding brings in the feeling of thrill and Rash driving may be a way to vent stress. Goes without saying that these are dangerous, No matter how late it is. To tackle the issue with mindset use music or podcasts to calm down and remind yourself it is not the end of the story. About the other factor do not use similar routes (a change of scenario helps), further have ride mates. Talking to ride mates helps you calm down too.

Untidiness: Having no organisation for things decreases your focus and increases stress. Having a clean and tidy environment makes you feel calm and in control. Laziness and cluttered setting make it difficult to maintain a tidy place. Getting over laziness is no easy task but the benefits are worth it. Each day tackle a small amount of clutter to keep yourself motivated and finally achieve an immaculate place, by doing this you beat laziness too.

Remember people ‘Systems bring results‘. Find out the two factors responsible for the bad habit that you want to eliminate from your life and remove them.
